Inside the We Care residence, Max had requested three people to be in attendance. The owner, Nigel Tamble, Sherry and Ulsa. From the moment they arrived they could see Nigel was all bent out of shape about having to be there. He was a tall man, mid-forties, dressed in a suit that looked one size too big for him. His hair was swept back with some kind of wet gel, giving it a greasy look. If she didn’t know what he did for a living, she would have figured he was a snake oil salesman. His mannerisms were large and wide as he walked back and forth considering what Max had told him.

“It’s impossible. We order in all of our medication. It’s locked up in a secure cabinet where the only people that have access to it are the caregivers. All of it is separated inside there according to those who need it.”

Jane was seated on a table, slightly perched on the edge. “Sherry, you mentioned that you aren’t here around the clock. It’s only until seven, is that right?”

“Correct.”

“So is it possible that someone might have snuck into the room and unlocked the cabinet and changed things over?”

“Please. These people are retired, they are not Mission Impossible spies.”

Jane flashed Max a look and he already knew what she was thinking, at least, Max had become familiar with her eye rolls, and body gestures.

“Do you have cameras?”

“No. Why would we have cameras? We are protecting a bunch of old people not celebrities. Nothing of value here.”

Jane felt like telling him to use that as their slogan. The media would have a field day with that.

“Do you mind showing me the room and the cabinet?” Max asked.

“Sure, come this way.”

They walked down the corridor and passed several of the guests. As they were getting closer to the office, a large woman and man ducked out of their apartment and blocked the way. He had a patch over one eye, and she was sporting rollers in her hair.

“Mr. Tamble. How lovely to see you.”

Sherry immediately barged forward. “Pat, this is not the time.”

“Oh I think it is.”

“What can I do for you, Mr. and Mrs.…”

“Ritts.”

“Right. How can I help?”

“You can start by having the police go through Walter’s apartment. I’ve been saying all along that these recent deaths are not natural. He’s killing them off with his herbal tea.”

“Oh please,” Jane said. “There are thousands of people every month that buy that from my sister’s website and I can assure you, they don’t keel over dead.”

She narrowed her eyes. “That’s right. You’re Jane Summers. I heard about your sister. How unfortunate. I heard she had an accident, or overdosed on that herbal tea of hers.”

Jane saw red, lifted her finger to her but Max stepped in just in time.

“I think you have misunderstood, madam. Agatha Summers runs a legitimate business with zero complaints from her clients.”

“Nonsense. Mr. Tamble, are you going to stand here and do nothing? I demand you check out his room.
